How to Socialize Cats with Other Cats

Posted by Jennifer on May 22nd, 2013

New pet adopters often come to us for help answering questions before adopting a new cat. One of the most common concerns new cat owners have is socializing the newly adopted cat with the current feline and canine members of the household.  It might seem like a difficult task, our friends over at PetParents have put together a few helpful tips to get you started. Adult cats typicaly don’t like change in their routine. So if your current adult cat suddenly sees an “uninvited” new feline roommate appear in “his” house, use his litter box and sit on his human’s lap, he very likely – and understandably – will be upset! The good news is with a slow introduction to give your new cat time to get used to the idea of sharing his territory and family with another feline, you can introduce a new cat or kitten amicably to your current cat or cats. By Amy Tokic, Editor of PetGuide.com. If your pooch is starting to look a little ruff around the edges maybe it’s time for a trip to the dog groomer. There are a few ways to help make this experience with your dog or puppy go smoothly. First brush your dog at home, and if you can, give them a bath. Next, be sure the groomer can handle a first time doggie. Make sure you understand how the groomer handles your dog to ensure there isn’t something you’re your puppy or doggie will have a problem with. Adopt-a-Pet.com is proudly promoting pet adoption with three huge billboards and many posters on transit shelter stops, made possible by a generous $10,000 donation from the passionate pet lovers at Purina. The billboards (image at right) encourage people to visit Adopt-a-Pet.com, where great people and pet connections are made, while the transit shelter posters (see the poster below) alert people to easy ways to help homeless shelter pets right from their smart phones. The Best Dogs for Apartment Living

Posted by jeff on May 13th, 2013

By Amy Tokic, Editor of PetGuide.com Living in an apartment will limit what dogs are best suited for your lifestyle. Dogs like humans need certain living conditions to be happy. Lucky for those who live in apartments there are several types of mixed-breeds, and breed types that will do well in closed quarters. You may think only smaller breeds would do well in apartments without a yard to run around in, but really it’s more about the energy level, age, and training level of the individual dog. For breeds that are on the lower end of the spectrum for those requirements, check out the list of the top 10 dogs for apartment living from PetGuide.com. Read More

Shy dog tip: ignore me please!

Posted by Jennifer on May 9th, 2013

Humans love to love on dogs! Dogs often are overwhelmed by how humans show affection. Humans show their affection toward other humans by looking them right in the eye, giving a firm handshake or big strong hug, laughing loudly, giving a manly strong thump on the back. For a shy dog, that kind of contact can be terrifying! Most people don’t recognize when dogs try to communicate that they are scared, shy, or stressed… did you know that a dog licking its lips, or yawning, is probably trying to tell you ,”Hey, I’m nervous! Please slow down. Give me my space. Let me take this meeting at my own speed.” Read More

Mrrrrrowwwww! Nighttime cat yowling help

Posted by Jennifer on May 7th, 2013

Just as you drift off to dreamland, a small lion starts yowling in your living room… not really, but if you’ve had your sleep interrupted by a cat’s nocturnal caterwauling, you may have thought it would sound about the same! The word “caterwauling” according the Webster dictionary is “to make a harsh cry; to protest or complain noisily” and we’re sure it got the “cat” part of its name from the cries that neighborhood cats make as they prowl around at night. So why is your indoor cat singing the street blues? Read on to find out many of the possible whys, and some possible solutions so you both can sleep the whole night through! Remember, new behavior takes about two weeks to get established, so don’t give up too soon. Read More

Earth-friendly cat litter choices

Posted by Jennifer on April 30th, 2013

Cat litter may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about being kind to the environment, but like so many other purchasing choices, you can make a difference with the type of litter you and your cats use. Our friends over at Petcentric posted this Earth Day article about some of the great natural litter options available, like paper pellet litter made from recycled newspapers (called, appropriately, Yesterday’s News) and a clumping cat litter like Pure Nature made from cedar, pine and corn. You can also make a difference with how you dispose of your used litter too. Paper litter like Yesterday’s News is biodegradable, especially if you use large brown paper lunch bags to collect and dispose of it. It’s also virtually dust free, scent free, and safe for kittens and post-surgical cats. Many natural litters are certified safe for septic and sewers too, so you can flush them. Cats can be finicky about what type of litter they prefer, so follow our steps to switching cat litter safely and slowly. You can make earth-friendly decisions even with your cat litter! Read More

Happy Beginnings: Liam

Posted by Jennifer on April 29th, 2013

“Little baby Liam is doing just great settling into his new home!! Thank you for all that you do!” This happy email was accompanied by the adorable kitten photo you see here, sharing the happy news of another Happy Beginning of a pet found on Adopt-a-Pet.com and adopted! His adopter went on to say she found him through Adopt-a-Pet.com and, “He was at PPAW in Greenback, TN! He’s a joy to have! We recently lost our two cats. They unfortunately got into some kind of poison in our neighborhood and passed away with in a week. It was awful. But we soon started looking for another furry friend, one that we could keep as an indoor-only pet. I got online and looked and saw little Liam and I just loved him already. We went and picked him up the day we saw him! And now he is all settled in and the whole family has just fell in love with his cute little self! And he will be an indoor cat only. We don’t want anything to happen to the little guy. His name actually came from the daughter of the woman who fostered him until we got him. There were 4 kittens in the litter and she named them after the boy band One Direction, and we just thought that it suited him well and decided to keep it!” Thank you Destiny for sharing your story, Liam’s photo, and for adopting a pet! Did you find your newly adopted pet on Adopt-a-Pet.com? Email us at info@adoptapet.com if you’d like to share your Happy Beginning and inspire others to adopt too! Read More
